Athletic Standard

In the USA, university sports teams are 'governed' by 3 main organisations. The level in which a specific university competes will depend on the division/governing body of the school.

1.  NCAA (D1 & D11)
2.  NAIA
3.  NJCAA

THE NCAA

The NCAA has 2 divisions which offer athletic scholarship funding, Division 1 and Division 11.

Division 1 competes at the highest level, these will generally be the bigger schools with big stadiums and big classrooms. Division 1 schools offer full ride scholarships to the very top student-athletes and partial scholarships to top national standard athletes.

Division 11 still plays at a very competitive level but compared to division 1, campuses may be smaller with a smaller student population. Division 11 is a great option for those looking for full ride scholarships but haven't been offered those from D1 schools.

THE NAIA

The NAIA is smaller than the NCAA but is still very popular with international students. You may be offered larger scholarships from NAIA schools in comparison to the NCAA.

THE NJCAA

If you are a high performing athlete wanting to go to the USA but have not quite hit the right grades in high school OR your SAT exam, then you are going to want to look at NJCAA universities for scholarship funding.

Sport Specific Recruiting Standards

Recruiting standards can be complex as every sport uses different statistics and metrics as a form of measurement. Not only that but college coaches will evaluate athletes differently and may have differing ideas of what they are looking for in an athlete. For example, in soccer a defender will be evaluated differently to a forward.

For sports such as track and field it’s easier to establish whether you are of college standard, as coaches can assess your ability based upon your best times.

Below are track & field scholarship recruiting standards for both men and women. The tables show the times you should be reaching when applying for NCAA D1, N11, or NAIA universities.

Academic Standard

THE NCAA

NCAA D1 minimum GPA requirement is 2.3.

NCAA D11 minimum GPA requirement is 2.2.

THE NAIA

NAIA minimum GPA requirement is 2.0.

THE NJCAA

The NJCAA does not have a minimum GPA requirement and your are not required to take the standardised tests for admission like you do for the NCAA and NAIA.

Because of the lower academic entry standards,  the NJCAA is a great option for student-athletes who want to compete in the USA but aren't quite at the academic standard of the NCAA or NAIA.
